Mt Bromo is a popular tourist destination in East Java. The volcano is noted for its spectacular sunrises, and majestic views across to Semeru volcano in the south. Mt. Bromo, a member of the chain of active volcanoes stretching across Java, is situated inside Tengger Caldera at the northern end of the national park which also encompasses Semeru, the highest mountain on Java, 20 km to the south. Mt. Bromo, the only active volcano inside the caldera, is a small pyroclastic cone with a wide crater, 600-800 m in diameter. The caldera itself has a diameter of approximately 10 km and is surrounded by cliffs 50-500 m high. 'Sea of sand' - that's what the caldera sometimes is called, as the caldera floor is mainly covered by sand and ash.
The volcano is located in the eastern part of Java, at a latitude of 112.95 E and a longitude of -7.942 S. The highest point of the crater rim reaches an altitude of 2329 m above sea-level.
